SWANCC to host its Trashy Fashion Show

The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County is hosting its ninth Trashy Fashion Show 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Room 1606, in Des Plaines. The event is free and reservations are not required.

This year's theme is "Heroes of Our Universe" and represents more than 20 artistic interpretive designs that will grace the catwalk, each made from rescued or reclaimed materials that were destined for the landfill.

Outfits are made from items such as used table linens or bed sheets; Halloween costumes; dryer sheets; worn-out or stained clothes; flooring samples; packaging materials; assorted bags and papers.

"The Trashy Fashion Show is an opportunity to have fun while highlighting the importance of source reduction - reduce and reuse, which is even better than recycling," said Mary Allen, SWANCC's recycling and education director.

"Each outfit makes a statement about being resourceful, which contributes to long-term environmental stewardship in the agency's communities."
