Schaumburg library offers book, movie clubs

Few things are more enjoyable to a book or movie lover than sharing opinions and insights with kindred spirits.

If you would like to enhance your reading or viewing experiences, join one of the book or movie clubs at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg.

Relive your favorite scenes, quotes or conversations. Debate the symbolism, laugh together over the comedy, or simply revel in the pleasure of discussion with like-minded people. In order to suit a variety of interests, the library offers an assortment of book and movie club choices. Check out the following groups, and keep in mind that most of them will not meet in December.

Those who enjoy movies made from books may want to try "Who Filmed This Book?" which meets from 6:30-9 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at STDL's Hanover Park Branch, 1266 Irving Park Road. Members view the movie and read the book of the same title, then enjoy a discussion of both.

In November, the group will discuss "A Walk Among the Tombstones." In January, the group will discuss "American Sniper." The fee is $25 for the year, which includes books. For more information, call (847) 923-3391.

Murder mysteries continue to be popular among readers, so the library created the "Murder by the Book." The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Rasmussen North Room. November's title will be Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None." A limited number of loan copies are available from the Fiction Desk one month prior to the program.

Love fiction? The "Worlds Await Book Discussion Group" primarily reads fiction, though every now and then they select a nonfiction title. The group meets monthly at various times, dates and locations to accommodate as many people as possible. There are morning, afternoon and evening time slots, with meetings held at the Central Library in Schaumburg, as well as the Hoffman Estates Branch at 1550 Hassell Road.

November's selection will be "All the Light We Cannot See." In January, the group will read a nonfiction title, "In the Kingdom of Ice." The $25 fee includes eight books. To see the meeting times and dates, check the library's Program Guide or go to www.schaumburglibrary.org. For more information, call (847) 923-3391.

If nonfiction is your preference, join "Second Floor Reads" monthly from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Central Library's Rasmussen North Room. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for Nov. 18 and Jan. 27. This is the library's only book group dedicated to nonfiction. November's title will be "Sixth Extinction," while January's will be "Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery." For more information, call (847) 923-3325.

Do you hunger for the written word? Try "Books for Breakfast," which is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, in the Rasmussen North Room of the Central Library in Schaumburg. Join STDL's fiction librarians over breakfast for a discussion of what's new and trending on the book scene.

Get reading recommendations that match your interests, watch book trailers, play a game or two and leave with some freebies. Bagels and coffee will be served. For more information, call (847) 923-3142.

Movie goers won't want to miss "Dann and Raymond's Movie Club" from 7:30-9:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month in the Audiovisual Theatre. Daily Herald film critic Dann Gire and award-winning author Raymond Benson present an evening of film clips on individual topics. No registration is required, so drop in for a fun night. November's topic will be "The Verdict is in - The Great Courtroom Movies."

As temperatures drop and winter settles in, you might enjoy cozying up with a good book or movie, then discussing it with others. If that sounds like a great way to spend some time, come to one of the library's book or movie discussions. There's still time to join.
