Mundelein pays tribute to WWII veterans

The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

To celebrate the historic event, Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz and the village board partnered with the American Legion and the VFW to host a World War II veterans recognition ceremony Monday evening.

"I think they are very honored that this is taking place, and it's really long overdue for a lot of them," said Wally Frasier, commander of Mundelein American Legion Post 867.

Twenty World War II veterans from the area were honored at Mundelein's village hall. The ceremony took place before the village board meeting as the crowd overflowed into the hallways.

Lentz read a proclamation and then handed out a certificate of recognition to each World War II veteran.

"Now, therefore, be it proclaimed that these veterans of World War II be recognized for their honorable contributions, sacrifices and service during that war," Lentz read.
