Week 2 playoffs, Metro Suburban: Brooks, Tinley Park visit Glenbard South

Class 5A

No. 8 Tinley Park (8-2) at No. 16 Glenbard South (6-4)

Game time: 2 p.m. Saturday.

Last week: Tinley Park 41, No. 9 Payton 20; Glenbard South 42, No. 1 Westinghouse 0.

Outlook: After cakewalks this first-time playoff meeting gives each team a much sterner test. Tinley Park lost only to 9-1 Oak Forest and Lemont. Speaking of Lemont, Titans running back Lemont Brooks has 1,236 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Tinley Park has run for 2,851 yards, nearly three times quarterback Dan McCullough's yards passing; McCullough is among four backs with at least 444 yards rushing and also has two consistent receiving threats. Scouting a Titans defense led by linebacker Eric Schultz and his 129 tackles, Glenbard South coach Ryan Crissey forecasts physicality and said the Raiders must own the clock by running to set up the pass. Raiders quarterback Jack Crouch hurt Westinghouse with 2 touchdown passes to 6-foot-6 Billy Bair and another to Jimmy Ebbole, helping open up a ground game that lacked workhorse Sean Cooke. If Cooke still can't play, Crissey likes Javonis Hawkins, who ran for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns against Westinghouse.

Advancement: The winner advances to a Class 5A quarterfinal game against the winner between No. 4 King (8-2) and No. 5 St. Laurence (8-2).

Class 3A

No. 6 Elmwood-Brimfield (9-1) at No. 3 IC Catholic Prep (9-1)

Game time: 4 p.m. Saturday at Plunkett Athletic Complex, Elmhurst.

Last week: Elmwood-Brimfield 40, No. 11 DePaul College Prep 0; IC Catholic 45, No. 14 Winnebago 7.

Outlook: Elmwood-Brimfield coach Todd Hollis, a 1992 Naperville Central graduate, is a National Federation of State High School Associations "Spirit of Sport" winner who has raised some $290,000 for Easter Seals. He's also built quite a football program, winning the Prairieland Blue Conference five straight seasons. The Trojans' double-wing, double-tight offense averages 48 points a game (not counting a forfeit win), using sweep, trap and dive plays behind 290-pound tackle Bradley Novak to spring backs like Sam Marincic and Jackson Harkness. IC defenders like Pat Guinan, James Lytton and Pat Jordan can't go to sleep on the play-action since E-B quarterback Austin Sims has 10 touchdown passes, 0 interceptions. IC linemen Anthony Silva, Jack Lamborn, Jesus Unzueta, Jeremy Annicella and Jimmy Kenneally counter size with guile and guts. A stalemate up front is a key for the Knights - as is the potent duo of IC running back Jordan Rowell and quarterback Luke Ricobene.

Advancement: The winner advances to a Class 3A quarterfinal game against the winner between No. 2 Princeton (10-0) and No. 7 Raby (8-2).

CLASS 6ANo. 6 Grayslake North Knights (7-3) at No. 3 Riverside-Brookfield Bulldogs (9-1) When: 1 p.m., Saturday

Last week: Grayslake North def. Hubbard, 47-8; Riverside-Brookfield def. St. Ignatius College Prep, 28-13.

Playoff history: Grayslake North is making its fourth straight playoff appearance and the fourth playoff appearance in the 11-year history of the school. Last year, Grayslake North lost in the first round to Wheaton St. Francis, 26-24. Before last week's win over Hubbard, the Knights had never won a playoff game … Riverside-Brookfield is making its second straight playoff appearance. Last year, the Bulldogs lost in the first round to Glenbard South, 31-7.

Skinny: It was an historic occasion last week at Grayslake North. The Knights won the first playoff game in the 11-year history of the school. Now, they're trying not to become a one-hit wonder. Grayslake North's Dami Oladunmoye had a banner day against Hubbard. He rushed for a personal-best 5 touchdowns and 192 yards on 24 carries…Riverside-Brookfield quarterback Ryan Swift is a threat to run or pass. In the Bulldogs' regular season finale two weeks ago against Glenbard South, he rolled up 5 touchdowns, 4 on the ground. Riverside-Brookfield's only loss of the season came to IC Catholic of Elmhurst, 15-7 in Week 6.

Up next: Winner advances to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of No. 7 Lake Forest (7-3) at No. 2 Prairie Ridge (9-1)
