Vikings' Sherels named NFC special teams player of week

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Marcus Sherels has become the first punt returner in Minnesota Vikings history to win an NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award.

Sherels had his third career touchdown Sunday in Chicago on a 65-yard punt return, as the Vikings beat the Bears. That's a franchise record for punt returns. His career average of 10.6 yards per punt return is also the best in team history.

The product of Rochester John Marshall High School and the University of Minnesota is also tied for the Vikings lead this season with five special teams tackles.

The last Vikings player to win the weekly special teams award was Adam Thielen in 2014.
