'The Sound of Music' to feature Metropolis students

Students of Metropolis School of the Performing Arts entertain audiences with "Getting to Know … 'The Sound of Music.'"

The Getting To Know … Series takes classic musicals by Rodgers & Hammerstein and offers uniquely adapted versions specifically for young performers. "The Sound of Music" was the final collaboration between the two, and the film version celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

Over 60 students auditioned for the 30-member cast, which includes students ages 7 to 15. Leading the cast are co-directors Nathan Brown and Danielle Coody, both Metropolis School faculty members. Rehearsals are held three times a week where cast members learn songs, dances and dialogue from the classic musical. The students then move to the Metropolis theater, where technical elements such as costumes, sets, lights and sound are added to make the full-scale production complete. This show marks the first onstage performance for many of the students, while others have performed in multiple productions.

The Metropolis cast includes Callista Berg of Palatine as Maria and Grant Oskroba of Arlington Heights as the Captain. The Von Trapp children are played by Katie Jordan (Liesl) of Des Plaines, Brayden Fast (Friedrich) of Mount Prospect, Victoria Tchalakov (Louisa) of Kildeer, Jason Kanabay (Kurt) of Arlington Heights, Makayla Zurbuch (Brigitta) and Nora Hubert (Marta) of Mount Prospect, and Aurora Kondruss (Gretl) of Palatine.

"We're having a lot of fun in rehearsals, but we're also learning at the same time," says Brown. "We're proud to showcase our talented students in this wonderful production."

"Getting to Know … The Sound of Music" will run Nov. 5-7. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under, and can be purchased online at MetropolisArts.com or by calling the Box Office at (847) 577-2121.
