Elgin man gets 3.5 years for repeat DUIs

A 49-year-old Elgin man has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison after pleading guilty to felony repeat DUI stemming from a spring 2014 arrest, according to prosecutors and court records.

William L. Bush Jr., of the 700 block of Jefferson Street, pleaded guilty in September to aggravated DUI and was sentenced last week by Judge Thomas Stanfa, records show.

Bush was originally charged with his fifth DUI, which carried a top prison term of 15 years, but after reviewing his file, it was determined the April 2014 offense was his fourth DUI, prosecutors said.

Elgin police found Bush asleep at the wheel, with the keys in the ignition and the car in reverse in April 2014 on the 300 block of North Jackson Street after he backed into another car, according to a police report. A blood draw at a hospital showed his blood alcohol concentration to be .268, more than three times the legal threshold, the report said.

Bush was fined $5,000 as part of the guilty plea because his BAC was more than .16, records show.

Bush had previous DUI arrests from 1997, 2001 and 2008, according to prosecutors.

Under state law, Bush can have his sentence halved for good behavior in prison. He gets credit for six days being held in jail, so he likely will serve about 22 months.
