Highland Park businesses team for food drive

Twenty businesses in downtown Highland Park came together to collect an unprecedented amount of food in a communitywide food drive in support of the Moraine Township Food Pantry throughout the month of October.

Participating retailers competed with one another to collect the most nonperishable food items, with Sunset Foods claiming the top spot, followed by Therapeutic Kneads and Cos Bar. Together, all the retailers collected more than 3,000 food items, all of which were on display at the Touch-a-Truck event Saturday, Oct. 24, in downtown Highland Park.

"This was one of the best food drives we have ever seen," Moraine Township Supervisor Anne Flanigan Bassi said. "An incredible amount of food was collected and we are extremely grateful to have been a part of it."

The Moraine Township Food Pantry works to eliminate hunger on the North Shore and is constantly collecting food donations.

"This is the season in which we really need food donations the most," Bassi said. "It gets difficult to keep our pantry fully stocked during this time of year and we welcome the support for the 700 residents from 225 households that visit our food pantry each month."

"This was such a great way for the Downtown Highland Park community to come together for a great cause," said Pam Hillman, owner of Posh Essentials, Sprout Kids and Beanstalk Toyland & Bookstore.

"We are proud to support Moraine Township Food Pantry and the good work they do to fight hunger."

Participating retailers included: Ami Ami, Beanstalk Toyland & Bookstore, Bett's, B2, Citywoods, Cos Bar, Eileen Fisher, Goodies, Gordon Salon, Highland Pop, HP Tops, Jolie Maison, My Best Friends Closet, My Only Hang Up, Posh Essentials, Ross Cosmetics & Boutique, Running Right, Sprout Kids, Sunset Foods and Therapeutic Kneads.

The Moraine Township Food Pantry's mission is to provide responsible, efficient, and compassionate services and support for residents. The food pantry is open to the public from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Evening hours can be arranged.
