Chin's all-around efforts set up a big Carthage win

It was one of the longest matches of the season for Carthage's women's volleyball team, and former Mundelein setter Karen Chin gave a nice assist to help the Lady Reds notch the win.

Actually, she handed out 41 assists while also collecting 12 digs in the 25-15, 13-25, 9-25, 25-14, 18-16 victory over the No. 20 University of Chicago Maroons (19-10).

Carthage, ranked No. 14 in the Oct. 17 AVCA Top 25 Poll, improved to 28-7 after going on to pick up wins over Concordia University (Wis.) and Hiram College.

• Augustana junior Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich) put down 15 kills and had a .519 hitting percentage in a 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17 victory over North Park.

She also had 6 kills and 7 assisted blocks in a 25-21, 24-26, 25-16, 25-18 triumph over Westminster as the Vikings went 4-0 in their own Pumpkin Bash tournament.

Men's soccer

Carthage junior forward Austin Bitta (Libertyville) and sophomore forward-midfielder Nick Vogel (Libertyville) assisted on the second goal for the Red Men in a 4-3 loss to the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Women's cross country

Carthage senior Sarah Myss (Carmel) finished 52nd (25:08.4) at the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin cross country championships at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Course in Kenosha, Wis.

North Central College (Ill.) won the event for the ninth time with a score of 35 points. Carthage came in 5th with 129 points.

• Augustana freshman Laura McNair (Lake Zurich) finished 27th (23:57.3) and her Vikings were sixth as a team.

• Notre Dame senior Karen Lesiewicz (Schaumburg) earned a 16th place all-conference in the 6K Atlantic Coast Conference championship with a time of 20.38.7. Notre Dame women placed third overall in the meet.

• North Central junior Amanda Cortese (Hersey) hit the finish line fourth (2:41.0) as the Cardinals collected their second straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin team championship and its fifth in the past seven years.

Men's soccer

Augustana senior Adam Witucki (Libertyville) helped set up a goal that tied the match at 2-2 before the Vikings went on to post a 4-3 season-ending victory over visiting Millikin.

Vikings freshman Samuel Kratzer (Libertyville) then produced the corner kick that led to the goal that put Augustana ahead 3-2.

In addition to Witucki, Anthony D'Angelo (Stevenson) and Gabriel Brouilette (Carmel) were al honored as part of Senior Day festivities.

Colucci, D'Angelo, Witucki and Brouillette all tied for the most assists this season with three apiece.

Men's cross country

Augustana freshman Rob Williams (Vernon Hills) placed 38th (27:34.3) and the Vikings were second at the CCIW Championships at the Wayne E. Dannehl Course.

Illinois senior Jereme Atchison (Buffalo Grove) won the Big Ten athlete of the week by winning the Illini Open at the University of Illinois Arboretum. Atchison crossed the finish line on the 8K course in 25:23.1, 11 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. It was his first Big Ten athlete of the week honor and the first for the Illini since Oct. 29, 2013.

• Augustana senior Ethan Koch (Prospect) was the Vikings' top finisher, running a fourth-place 25:44.9, at College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships at Wayne E. Dannehl Course. The Vikings took second place as a team.

Football

Augustana senior quarterback Sam Frasco (Prospect) accounted for 362 yards of total offense and had a part in all six of Augustana's touchdowns in a 45-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory over North Park.

Vikings junior linebacker Jack Asquini (Buffalo Grove) led the defense with 16 total tackles (five solo and 11 assists) and 3 tackles for losses.

• Carthage junior quarterback Ethan Olles (Palatine) threw 3 touchdowns passes, including one to freshman wide receiver Eddie Miklasz (Hersey) and another to junior tight end Javier Rhoades (Leyden) in the Red Men's 36-17 victory over Millikin.

Olles finished the game 13-of-22 passing for 174 yards and no interceptions.
