New 'gateway' into Rosemont from O'Hare to open today

A new four-lane roadway extension being heralded as a "gateway" to Rosemont from O'Hare International Airport opens today. The $18 million road project extends Balmoral Avenue west over Mannheim Road, under O'Hare's "people mover" train line, and connects with Bessie Coleman Drive near the international terminal. Mayor Brad Stephens said the Balmoral extension, which is 23 years in the making, will serve as an example of how "transportation breeds development." Full story.

Suburbs celebrate Day of the Dead

Arlington Heights Memorial Library's celebration of Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead, included crafts, food and face painting. At an event in Aurora, visitors left offerings at a table used as a makeshift altar. Among the several celebrations held Sunday, the two events incorporated traditions associated with the holiday. "It's a great time to expose the community to something that is important to a lot of people living here," said Jennifer Czajka, Arlington Heights library program supervisor. Full story.

Settlement reached in St. Charles sushi pit stumble

A Sugar Grove woman recently reached a confidential settlement to her lawsuit seeking damages from Wok 'N Fire of St. Charles restaurant for a tumble into a sushi pit, according to court records. Sarah Chacon, formerly of St. Charles, sued the restaurant in late 2103 for injuries suffered when she fell off a sushi table that was converted into a dance area during a December 2012 anniversary party for the restaurant. Pumpkins fly in sky over Mundelein

Children looked up in glee as pumpkins were flung high in the air by a giant trebuchet, flying far down the Mundelein sled hill and splattering across the field to the cheers of the crowd. The Mundelein Park District held its eighth annual Pumpkin Drop on Sunday at the Keith Mione Community Park. "It's awesome and really cool," said Joseph Rudolph, 11, of Libertyville. "The best part is that we get to kill dead pumpkins." Full story.

Railroad crossing work has closed Allanson Road in Mundelein between Washington Blvd. and Tower Road from today until November 13th. People can take a detour around the work on Town Line Road or Route 176. Full traffic.
