Carbondale celebrates Halloween after 15-year crackdown ends

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Halloween has returned to Carbondale after a 15-year city crackdown prompted by previous holiday troubles in the home of Southern Illinois University.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (bit.ly/1PesUqb ) reports Carbondale police cited no Halloween-related problems by late Saturday night.

Carbondale Police Chief Jeff Grubbs told The Associated Press Sunday that the relatively uneventful night was part of a "slower than normal fall weekend."

The Carbondale City Council agreed in July to lift all holiday restrictions, including previous limits on keg beer sales. That follows a two-year trial period in which bars were allowed to stay open.

Days of violent riots that caused damage to businesses occurred in 2000, the last time the city lifted its Halloween restrictions.

Some downtown businesses reported calling in extra security Saturday night as a precaution.
