St. Viator nets regional championship

St. Viator's girls volleyball team won its first regional crown since 2009 on Thursday night, and the Lions got to do it before their home fans.

Hosting its own Class 3A regional in the Woodstock sectional, No. 2 seeded St. Viator posted a 26-24, 19-25, 25-22 victory over No. 7 Resurrection at the Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

It was the Lions' fourth girls volleyball regional in school history, the others coming in 2005 (AA), 2008 (4A) and 2009 (3A).

Coach Charlie Curtin's Lions (20-16) will face No. 6 Regina in the sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Woodstock.

Lions sophomore Michaela Mueller was 158-of-158 setting with 31 assists while senior libero Ellie Meyer collected 41 digs and classmate Danielle Laterza 22.

Top attackers for the Lions were Gabi Thomas (14), Alyssa Forbes (10 kills) and Carrie Leazer (9), who led the team with a pair of aces.

New Trier d. Rolling Meadows: Top-seeded New Trier advanced to the Maine South sectional semifinal on Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-16 victory over Rolling Meadows, which finished its season at 21-14-1.

Maddie Sellergren (4 kills), Hannah Mickey (3 kills) and Paige Connor (3 kills) led the Mustangs' attack set by Megan King (8 assists) and Megan Mich (5 assists).

Top servers for Meadows were Mickey (8-of-9 with 1 ace) and Madeline Rebsamen (6-of-6), while Jenny Srnak contributed a block.

Stevenson d. Palatine: No. 2 seeded Stevenson posted a 25-9, 25-22 victory over MSL West champion Palatine (24-13) in the championship match of the Zion-Benton regional.

The Patriots (29-8) were led on attack by Isabella Milejczyk (6 kills) and Jori Radtke (5).

Glenbrook North d. Prospect: Glenbrook North, seeded No. 4 in the Maine South sectional, defeated No. 5 Prospect 25-15, 18-25, 28-26 in the championship of Spartans' own regional.

Mary Mazurek (10 kills), Kaeli Myers (7) Brenda Kendziera (7) and Maggie Porwit (4) led the attack for Prospect (25-12).

Senior setter Michelle Haaning had 25 assists for the Knights while clasmate Sammy Withey collected 3 blocks.

Valerie Thomas led with 21 digs, followed by Nikki Giammarino (11), Haaning (11), Myers (9), Mazurek (6) and Kelly Prete (6).
