Week 1 playoffs, East Suburban Catholic: Benet's hapy to be home
Class 7A
No. 21 St. Charles North (7-2) at No. 12 Benet (7-2)
Game time: 1 p.m. Saturday at Benedictine University in Lisle.
Outlook: After wicked first-round road losses the last two years, Benet finally earned a home playoff game. The records are identical but the schedules are vastly different. While Benet went 4-2 against qualifiers and grinded its way through the East Suburban Catholic Conference, St. Charles North went 2-2 and lost key Upstate Eight River games against Geneva and Batavia. The North Stars have major offensive talent led by quarterback Zach Mettetal, who's thrown for 1,830 yards in an offense averaging 400 yards and 40 points. Benet's defense is led by the ESCC defensive player of the year, linebacker Charlie Weidenbach. The defensive line gets a huge boost this week with the return from injury of Trent Kramer and Patrick O'Meara. Redwings quarterback Jack Sznajder, who's thrown for 1,800 yards, heads an offense that gets physical with Weidenbach and safety Alec McEachern playing both ways. Look for running back Marty Dosen to get more carries after nursing an injury.
Advancement: The winner advances to a Class 7A second-round game against the winner of No. 28 Belleville West (5-4) at No. 5 Cary-Grove (8-1).
