Boston Fish Market in Des Plaines gets approval to expand

Boston Fish Market in Des Plaines has received approval to build a 2,400-square-foot restaurant addition and outdoor patio to support its growing operation.

It'll likely be sometime next year when the business at 1225 Forest Ave. will break ground on the expansion, according to George Sakas, Des Plaines' director of community and economic development.

The city's zoning board of appeals this week approved a zoning variation needed to make the project a reality. The variation will allow for only 56 parking spaces in the store's parking lot, instead of the 75 required by city code.

Boston Fish secured a 5-year off-site parking agreement with Aldi, located across the street, that will accommodate overflow parking for the seafood restaurant and wholesale business.

The matter first was considered by the zoning board in August, but board members continued the case several times until Boston Fish secured a long-term parking agreement.

As a condition of approval, Boston Fish must install a sign at the Aldi lot that indicates parking for the restaurant.
