Furniture too big for the room

Obviously, I don't know how to decorate!! We liked this orangey-red color, but the sectional is too big, the ottoman is too big, the lamps look like a dorm room, everything is run down, nicked and beat up. We need something tall in there to balance things.

My husband works from home in the lazy boy and we need some sort of storage for his work stuff that is always everywhere. It's always a mess! It connects to our kitchen, so it would be nice to have some sort of sofa table with storage on the back of the couch that would add to our kitchen storage.

The carpet is a mess (cough, wine stains, cough). UGH!!!! The room is small and we are not using the space well. We spend all our time in this room and it would be a life changer to not have it be so cramped.

Budget: $1,000 for lighting

This room is a good size but looks small and cramped with the oversized furniture. Scaling the furniture down will make the space feel larger and make it easier to get in and out of their space. Adding some height with interesting lamps will create some interest and texture to this flat space.

Suggestions:

• Replace the couches with smaller pieces to open the space up. Hooker Furniture makes beautiful and comfortable couches. I recommend the Windward Dart Honey for neutral tones and style with a more tailored and smaller scale.

• A furniture piece in the left corner will balance the room and create storage for work materials to hide out of site. Hooker Furniture's Melange Matisette has a fun pattern that blends well with the draperies.

• Next place an intricate and taller table lamp in the corner on top of the furniture unit. Dimond's 138-014 adds a 3D geometrical form that will create interest without being too busy. Replace the torchiere lamp in the window corner with a thin floor lamp and shade. Currey and Co.'s 8060 Carnival Silver Granello Portable Floor Lamp will tie in with the other floor lamp and Hooker Furniture's Matisette.

• Lastly, slide the chair back towards the window and replace the end table with a less combersom piece, such as Hooker Furniture's Skyline round end table with glass top.
