Hollingsworth hitting his stride at Wheaton College

Libertyville High School graduate Marshall Hollingsworth of Wheaton College was named a men's soccer player of the week in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

The senior forward, who is majoring in business/economics, had 3 goals and 2 assists as the Thunder went 2-0-0 against CCIW competition.

He scored 2 goals, including the game-winner in the 72nd minute, during a 4-1 win against 18th-ranked Carthage.

Hollingsworth also converted a penalty kick goal and added an assist on Stephen Golz's goal in the 50th minute of a 4-0 shutout over Illinois Wesleyan.

Hollingsworth also earned the award in September.

Women's volleyball

University of Dubuque senior Klaudia Basierak (Grayslake North) recently surpassed Greta Pemsl as No. 2 on the school's all-time kills list and now has 1,689. She holds the school record for attack attempts. Basierak also is working toward her third straight academic all-conference recognition.

Basierak was named Iowa Conference Freshman of the Year and was a first-team all-conference pick.

She is only the second UD player with three first-team all-conference honors and is working on No. 4.

"She's a great volleyball player, but she is going to be an awesome teacher and she is going to have a great life," UD coach April Elsbernd said on the school's website . "We are going to miss her for sure."

Basierak said she had no intentions of setting records at Dubuque.

"I think the keys are the teammates and coaches," Basierak said. "The chemistry makes you a better player. I'm just here for my team and whatever I can do for my team."

"She's not the type of person that was OK with where she was as a freshman," Elsbernd added. "She wanted to get better and we've worked with her on her overall physicality and she has made huge strides in that area. It's helped because when you are getting that many attempts and you are not physically fit, you will breakdown and struggle at the end of the season. She's strong."

Basierak's leadership also helps the Spartans as much as her statistics.

"Leadership is really the area she has most improved in," Elsbernd said. "This team keeps pushing and fighting and that is what I love about this team."

• Augustana junior Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich) was named to the Dig Panici Classic all-tournament team at Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Vikings split a pair of matches, losing to ninth ranked UW-Whitewater 3-0 before bouncing back to defeat Webster 3-0. Morrissey totaled 17 kills (2.83 average) on .244 hitting percentage with just 7 errors in 41 total attempts. She also had 5 digs and 2 solo blocks.

Carthage senior Ryan McGuire (Libertyville) had a 76.8 mark over four events this season. Senior Matt Hirsch (Lakes) followed with a 77.5, and freshman Joe Batliner (Barrington) had a 79.0 average.
