Oakton Community College to inaugurate new president Friday

The fourth president in Oakton Community College's history will be inaugurated during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday, on the school's Des Plaines campus.

Joianne Smith assumed the presidency July 1, following the retirement of 20-year President Margaret Lee. Smith was chosen by the board of trustees following 13 years at Oakton as dean of students (2002-2004) and vice president for student affairs (2005-2015).

Smith earned a Ph.D. and master's degree in counseling psychology, and still maintains a psychologist license in Illinois.

The ceremony will take place at the TenHoeve Center and be followed by a reception in the cafeteria. It follows a 9 a.m. symposium and daylong series of breakout sessions themed "Our community. Our College. Our Story."
