Correction: County Gun Ordinance story

DIXON, Ill. (AP) - In a story Oct. 25 about gun ordinances in Lee County, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the county lacks a gun ordinance. It has gun ordinances, but not one regulating private gun ranges. The AP also erroneously reported that a man who sells guns from a shed behind his house lets customers fire them outside. The man fires the guns himself and doesn't let customers fire them.

DIXON, Ill. (AP) - The sheriff in Lee County in northern Illinois says authorities are looking into a firearms ordinance governing private gun ranges because the county doesn't have one.

The (Dixon) Telegraph reports (http://bit.ly/1N1fOw8 ) that Lee County Sheriff John Simonton and the county board are considering creating a law to govern what county residents can and cannot do with firearms.

The issue arose after neighbors complained about noise because a man who sells guns from a shed behind his house was firing the weapons into a berm. Lee County sheriff's deputies investigated and found the man wasn't breaking a law because there isn't a law.

Simonton says he specifically wants to look at how private gun ranges are being used. He says he wants to make sure everyone is safe without impeding anyone's right to bear arms.
