Hersey takes second at Lake Park
Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball champion Hersey closed out its regular season by finishing second at the Lake Park Invite on Saturday in Roselle.
Addison Trail defeated the Huskies 25-23, 26-24 in the title match after the Huskies topped Fremd (25-18, 25-15) in the semifinals and Glenbrook South (25-18, 17-25, 15-11) earlier in the day.
On Friday night, the Huskies handled the same Addison Trail team in three sets (15-25 25-18 15-9) and fell to Dundee Crown (25-22 21-25 15-11).
Liz Fuerst (37 kills), Katie Rozanski (26), Amy Morgan (19), Zoe Strozewski (16) and Mary Claire O'Shea (13) led the attack for Hersey (26-9) while Emma Frankiewicz had 51 digs and Liz Solans 36.
Katie Rozanski's 12 blocks led Hersey followed by Strozewski and Fuerst, who had 8 apiece.
The 3 wins brought Hersey coach Nancy Lill to within 8 of 900 for her career. According to the IHSA record books, only five either girls volleyball coaches have reached that plateau.
Lyons Invite: Prospect (23-12) went 2-3 with wins over Glenbrook North and Hinsdale Central and losses to Shepard, Normal and Fenwick.
Michelle Haaning collected 80 whiles leading in digs were Nikki Giammarino (56), Haaning (24), Kaeli Myers (54), Valerie Thomas (28) and Kelly Prete (26).
Attack leaders for the Knights were Kaeli Myers (24 kills), Mary Mazurek (18), Maggie Porwit (15) Brenda Kendziera (14), Hanning (13), Sammy Withey (8) and Clare O'Carroll (7).
Prete served 5 aces, followed by Myers (4) and Hanning (3).
Immaculate Conception Invite: Wheeling (10-25) went 3-2 in the invite and was led by Timber Terrell (35 kills, 51 digs) and Michaela Vasey (21 kills, 49 digs). Melissa Claver added 10 kills with a team-high 10 blocks.
Remy Jankowski and Jessica Janowski led in aces with 7 and 6 respectively while Janowski (61 assists) and Annalisa Baranows (17 assists) directed the Wildcats' attack.
