Six Flags Great America pays off baseball bet

Six Flags Great America in Gurnee has paid off its baseball playoff bet with a sister park in New Jersey by officially changing its name to the Six Flags Great Mets, officials said Friday.

Spokeswoman Katy Enrique said the park also renamed its record-breaking wooden roller coaster, Goliath, the "GoMets," after the New York Mets swept the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series.

Park President Hank Salemi said the name changes will be in place through the remainder of Fright Fest.

"We were so confident that this was the year for the Chicago Cubs that we amped up our wager with Six Flags Great Adventure," Salemi said in a news release. "Unfortunately, we will have to bear these two shameful renames of our park and roller coaster for the remaining weekends of Fright Fest. There's always 2016."

Six Flags Great Adventure is in Jackson, New Jersey, between Philadelphia and New York.

Officials at Great America and Great Adventure agreed to the bet before the start of the Cubs-Mets series. If the Cubs had won, Great Adventure would have been renamed "Six Flags Great Cubs" for the duration of its Fright Fest. Likewise, its record-breaking Kingda Ka roller coaster would have been renamed "Kingda Cubs."

This is the second bet between Six Flags parks regarding the baseball playoffs. Six Flags St. Louis renamed its American Thunder ride to "Cubs Thunder" after the Cubs beat the Cardinals in the National League Divisional Series. That bet followed a taunt on the park entrance sign in St. Louis that read: "No worries. It's just the Cubs."
