Mount Prospect man admits selling counterfeit sports items

A 61-year-old Mount Prospect man pleaded guilty Thursday to selling unlicensed sports merchandise Thursday.

Jeff Huang was sentenced to two years' probation and ordered to pay restitution in exchange for pleading guilty to selling counterfeit items featuring logos from the Chicago Blackhawks and other professional sports teams at his Elk Grove Village store, Max International Trading Corp..

Huang was arrested in June following a joint investigation between Cook County Sheriff's police and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the wake of an NHL complaint about the sale of unauthorized merchandise. The merchandise consisted mostly of lamps containing team logos, police said.

Police recovered more than 130,000 items that had an estimated retail value of $549,000, prosecutors said during Huang's bond hearing earlier this year.
