Fun run a hit with Woodview students

More than 400 kindergarten through fourth-grade students ran, jumped and crawled through obstacles on a one-mile course as they participated in the "Wings Over Woodview" fun run Tuesday at Woodview School in Grayslake.

The trail consisted of four laps around the school and four fun stations. Parents and family members were welcome to attend as spectators or participants.

"We're having our first fun run and we're holding it during Red Ribbon Week to promote healthy living and good choices. We've had three weeks of raising money - all the students were encouraged to try to raise $50 - and that money will go to our school garden, an outdoor classroom and a playground," said Abbie Pietruszynski, PTO co-president.

The school has already raised 80 percent of the $10,000 goal.

"I think it's so fun, and it's great to get the exercise. It's a great idea," kindergarten teacher Rebecca Cunningham said.

One of Cunningham's students, Owen Phillips, said the fun run "was hard and tiring but fun." When asked if he needed a nap afterward, Owen shrugged his shoulders and shook his head "no."
