Mount Prospect man charged with trying to kill his wife

A 29-year-old Mount Prospect man originally charged with aggravated domestic battery against his wife had his bail doubled Tuesday after prosecutors added attempted murder to the charges against him.

Prettiest Davis, of the 1500 block of West Dempster Street, was ordered held on $150,000 bail by Judge Joel Greenblatt, who also ordered Davis be fitted with a GPS monitor if he posts bail.

Additionally, Greenblatt granted an order of protection against Davis, who must vacate his apartment and may not contact his wife, according to Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin.

Mount Prospect police went to Davis' home Friday after they received reports that he had texted what appeared to be suicidal statements, Shin said.

Police found an unresponsive woman lying on the ground outside the home and the defendant standing nearby, Shin said. Davis denied knowing the woman and gave officers a false name, Shin said.

He then told police the woman had taken a drug overdose, Shin said, and she was taken to the hospital, where an examination revealed neck injuries.

"The investigation revealed the victim and the defendant had been married and had gotten into a verbal altercation earlier" after the woman said she wanted a divorce, Shin said.

Shin said Davis later followed her out of the apartment, threw her to the ground, threatened to kill her and choked her until she lost consciousness.

Video surveillance showed 20 minutes elapsed from the time of the attack until the police arrived, Shin said, adding Davis failed to "assist or render aid" to the woman.

If convicted, Davis faces up to 30 years in prison. He next appears in court on Nov. 6.
