Girls cross country: Crystal Lake South's Bruzzini wins FVC title

Crystal Lake South's Caitlin Bruzzini wanted to make sure she had plenty of energy left at the end of Saturday's Fox Valley Conference girls cross country meet at Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake.

She did.

Bruzzini passed Crystal Lake Central's Janine Orvis in the last 20 yards to take top honors with a time of 19:22.8. Orvis placed second with a time of 19:24.4.

"I was determined to finish first," said Bruzzini, a junior. "I wanted to make a good kick at the end and I had plenty of energy. It helps to run on my home course because it is such a hard course."

Central was the team champion with a score of 52. Huntley, with an eighth-place finish from Mary Raclawski, placed second with a score of 81. Megan Girmscheid's fourth place finish helped Grayslake Central finish third with a score of 117 and Sophia Oury finished 10th to lead Hampshire to a fifth place mark with a score of 142 points.

Bruzzini's individual title led Crystal Lake South to sixth place with 145 points.

Dundee-Crown, which finished eighth with a score of 199, was led by a Top 10 finish from Sylvia Waz, who was seventh.
