Boys golf: St. Edward's Mattas tied for lead at 1A state

St. Edward senior Michael Mattas is in prime shape to bring home some top state hardware and the Green Wave boys golf team is in the hunt for a team trophy as well after Friday's first round of the Class 1A state finals at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.

Mattas shot a 3-over pat 75 and is in a three-way tie for first place with Urbana U-High's Varun Chopra and Byron's Connor Hurd.

St. Edward stands in fourth place as a team after shooting a 335. Steve Poremba (85), Jason Allen (86) and Aaron Worf (89) scored for the Green Wave, who are 5 shots behind Rock Island Alleman for the third-place trophy. Byron leads the team chase with a 321 and Quincy Notre Dame is second at 324.

Aurora Christian's Devin Johnson shot an 81 and is tied for 16th place.

Class 2A: Kaneland freshman Will Marshall was the low-scoring individual from the Fox Valley area with a 75 at ISU's Weibring Golf Course, which puts him in a 7th place tie heading into Saturday's final round.

Mac Cowen of Aurora Central Catholic shot an 80 and is tied for 33rd, while Joe Sherman of Burlington Central had an 87 for a 76th place tie and Kaneland's Brett Glennon shot 88 to tie for 84th place. North Shore Country Day's Drew Miles is the individual leader after shooting a 69.

Class 3A: Geneva shot a 340 and is tied for 11th place as a team in the 3A tournament at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington. Andrew Abel (83), Jack McDonald (85), Tyler Isenhart (85) and James Kuzich (87) scored for the Vikings.

Individually, Cary-Grove's Kyle Irlbacker had a 79 (tied for 28th), Danny Buetow of St. Charles East shot 80 (tied for 32nd), while Nicholas Huggins of Marmion and Billy Walker of Jacobs are each tied for 67th place after shooting 84s.

Hinsdale Central leads the Class 3A team standings with a 304 and Neuqua Valley's Nick Walker shot 72 to take the individual lead.
