Motorcyclist dies after striking school bus in Elgin

An 18-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday after crashing into a school bus in Elgin, police said.

Authorities determined in a preliminary investigation that the motorcyclist struck an Elgin Area School District U-46 bus after failing to stop at a red light at the intersection of Center and Chicago streets, police said.

The motorcyclist was driving south on Center Street, while the bus driver was traveling east on Chicago Street. That intersection has been closed since the crash occurred at around 10:55 a.m., authorities said.

The motorcyclist was taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Authorities are withholding his identity until they can notify the family. An autopsy will be performed by the Kane County coroner's office, police said.

The bus driver, a 54-year-old man, was not injured, authorities said, and the school bus was otherwise empty.

The Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone with information should call (847) 289-2661.
