Man facing charges in Carroll County dog attack surrenders

DELPHI, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana man whose pit bulls mauled and seriously injured two young women has turned himself in to authorities.

Fifty-year-old Richard L. Darter of the Carroll County town of Cutler was charged Friday with eight counts of dog bite liability resulting in serious bodily injury. He faces up to eight years in prison if convicted on all of the charges.

The women were walking along a county road near Cutler, about 40 miles northwest of Indianapolis, on Oct. 1 when four pit bulls from a nearby home chased them into a field and began attacking.

Authorities say Darter saw the attack and entered the field to try to restrain the dogs, only to be attacked himself.

WLFI-TV (http://bit.ly/1G2y0UO ) reports that Darter turned himself in and posted bond Monday night.

A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 19.
