Man killed in hit-and-run near Buffalo Grove

A Lake County man died late Monday night after he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near his mailbox, authorities said.

James A. Spicak, 68, of unincorporated Prairie View near Buffalo Grove, was found about 11 p.m. Monday in a ditch near his mailbox, Lake County sheriff's Detective Christopher Covelli said.

A preliminary investigation determined an unknown vehicle apparently was traveling west on West Pope Boulevard before it hit several mailboxes and also struck Spicak.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, they found Spicak unresponsive with injuries consistent with having been hit by a moving vehicle, Covelli said. Spicak was taken by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead, Covelli said.

The area where the hit-and-run crash occurred, near the intersection of West Pope Boulevard and North Eugene Avenue, is in a neighborhood of homes east of Weiland Road.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County sheriff's office. Anyone with information about the crash should call the sheriff's office at (847) 549-5200 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.
