Burger King returning, Dunkin' Donuts coming to Lombard

A Burger King will return next year to Roosevelt Road in Lombard and a new Dunkin' Donuts will open off Butterfield Road if the village board grants its approval this week.

Burger King operated for 23 years at 401 E. Roosevelt Road but closed in November 2011 with its operators citing low revenues.

Now, a new franchisee is proposing to completely remodel the interior and exterior of the building to make it consistent with current prototypes, said Bill Heniff, Lombard director of community development.

Building permits already have been issued, but the village board will vote Thursday on reopening the drive-through and other changes, including a free-standing sign that would be the third in the High Point Centre shopping center.

Village code usually doesn't allow free-standing signs in areas that already have a shopping center sign, Heniff said, but Burger King is a unique case.

"The plan commission found that given its location, a free-standing sign could be supported," he said.

In addition, the village board will vote on a request to re-subdivide the property southwest of the AMC movie theater and east of the Chase Bank near Yorktown Center in preparation for the construction of a Dunkin' Donuts.

The lot currently contains parking spaces that are rarely used by shoppers or theater patrons. Heniff said there will not be direct access to the Dunkin' Donuts from Butterfield Road, but customers can use Fairfield Avenue or a secondary "ring road" entrance to the mall area off Butterfield to get to the new business.
