Third man sentenced in 2014 Aurora shooting

A 33-year-old man recently was sentenced to 12 ½ years in prison after admitting to his role in the June 2014 shooting of an Aurora woman in her home.

Ajaie M. Martin, of the 300 block of Old Indian Trail Road Aurora, must serve 85 percent, or about 10 ½ years, of the sentence for felony aggravated battery with a firearm. according to Kane County court records.

Prosecutors dismissed the most severe charge of attempted murder, which carried a penalty of up to 30 years in prison, in exchange for the guilty plea, which was accepted in late September by Kane County Judge John Barsanti, records show.

Martin is the third of four people arrested in connection with the June 14, 2014, shooting to plead guilty.

Authorities said Martin and another man were seen running from the area of the 200 block of Fourth Street on Aurora's near east side after a 43-year-old woman was shot in the neck in her home.

A police dog tracked the scent of Martin and Arturo W. Trejo to an apartment on the 200 block of Fourth Street, and two residents there also were arrested on weapons charges after two guns and ammunition were seized, authorities said.

Trejo, 21, of the 400 block of North Lancaster Avenue, Aurora, is due in court on Nov. 12 on attempted murder charges and he is being held on $750,000 bail at the Kane County jail, meaning he must post $75,000 to be released while the case is pending.

Alexander Turner, 23, of the 200 block of Fourth Street, Aurora, pleaded guilty in March 2015 to possession of a firearm by a felon and was sentenced to four years in prison, records show.

Erika Benavides, 22, also of the 200 block of Fourth Street, Aurora, was sentenced to 17 months probation and 30 days in jail after pleading guilty last month to possession of a firearm without a valid Firearm Owners Identification card, records show. If she violates probation, she could be resentenced to up to a year in jail.
