US stocks are little changed in early trading after big week

NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks are little changed in early trading as traders look ahead to the start of corporate earnings season.

The market is coming off its best week of the year.

Several stocks were making big moves on corporate announcements Monday.

Eli Lilly plunged 7 percent after saying it would discontinue the development of a drug. EMC Corp. rose 3 percent after Dell said it would buy the data storage company.

The Dow Jones industrial average was off 11 points at 17,073 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped two points to 2,012. The Nasdaq composite edged down four points to 4,826.

Bond trading was closed for the Columbus Day holiday in the U.S.
