Literacy group seeks volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help Tri-Cities adults learn to read, write, speak and understand English. More than a dozen adults are waiting to learn.

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley will hold free tutor training workshops in October for residents who want to help adults communicate in English.

The next workshop will be 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 13-22, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

Each workshop will cover the techniques used to teach adults English while discussing the problems they face when they are unfamiliar with American culture. Each workshop graduate will be matched with one adult student.

You will meet for one hour each week at a time and public location that is convenient. Most volunteer tutors meet with their students at the St. Charles, Batavia, Geneva or Town & Country public libraries. Other meeting locations are also available.

Volunteer tutors do not need to know a second language or have a background in education to help. Adult students say that the best tutors are patient, good listeners and give practical information.
