Week 7, Chicago Catholic: St. Francis, Montini in Green Division battle

St. Francis (4-2, 1-0) at Montini (6-0, 1-0)

Chicago Catholic League Green

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Last week: St. Laurence 49, St. Francis 35; Montini 42, St. Joseph 0.

Last year: St. Francis 31, Montini 7.

Outlook: Every year is a new year, as St. Francis coach Mike Fitzgerald told his boys, but Montini returners like two-way lineman Joe Spivak and fleet cornerback Mitch West and receiver Tyler Millikan surely remember the Spartans' 2014 convincing win. Despite what Fitzgerald termed a wake-up call last week, bright spots continued to emerge with receivers Will Purdom and Brett Whelton, new go-to back Nolan Pechan and quarterback Peter Fassnacht, up to 963 yards passing on a 71 completion percentage. St. Francis offensive linemen such as Nick Kavouris and Gabe Meyer have a task ahead sealing off active Montini defensive ends Tommy Hyland and Brandon Andino, and look for Nick Foster to have an impact in nickel-defense downs. Montini coach Chris Andriano said the Broncos offense hasn't set the world on fire, though quarterback Justin Blake has made a "100 percent turnaround" in terms of making decisions and protecting the ball. Montini's overall speed is hard to match.

Next week: De La Salle at St. Francis; Montini at Fenwick.

Marmion (2-4, 0-2) at De La Salle (2-4, 1-1)Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday

The quick hit: The only win for the Cadets since a 24-14 season-opening triumph over Plainfield Central (0-6) was a forfeit victory in Week 5. Marmion hopes for a better result at De La Salle in this Chicago Catholic Green matchup in the shadow of the Green Line.

Aurora Central Catholic (3-3, 1-1) at Glenbard South (4-2, 2-0)Game time: 7:15 p.m. Friday

The quick hit: The Chargers' first-team offensive line was healthy last week for the first time since summer camp: Jairo Varela, Jamarco Cordero, Jake Ishmael, Brant Krpan and Micah Miller. Junior defensive back Griffin Zajac has picked off 2 passes in a game twice this season.

St. Laurence (4-2, 2-0) at Aurora Christian (3-3, 0-2)Game time: 7 p.m. Friday

The quick hit: The Eagles take on the Chicago Catholic League White leaders. St. Laurence knocked off state-ranked St. Francis 49-35 in Wheaton last week. Aurora Christian running back Jeremiah Wright has rushed for 684 yards and 4 touchdowns in 102 attempts and caught 29 passes for 326 yards and 5 scores.
