Gary schools considers storing art collection with company
GARY, Ind. (AP) - The Gary School Board is considering spending more than $14,000 to store its extensive art collection with a private Chicago art preservation company until it determines what to do with it.
The (Merrillville) Post-Tribune reports (http://trib.in/1j9oOTU) the district has about 118 pieces of art kept in a vault. School board president Antuwan Clemons said the school district's new financial specialist recommended safeguarding the collection by storing it with an art specialist company until the district knows what the community wants it to do with the art.
Clemons says no detailed inventory has been prepared for several years. The last one, about a decade ago, appraised the collection at $534,000. Clemons said he would be open to selling some of it to help the cash-strapped district pay off its debts.
