Group says interest in Chicago Halloween parade growing

CHICAGO (AP) - Organizers of an inaugural Chicago Halloween parade say they expect at least 4,000 people to participate.

The Chicago Cultural Mile Association says this week it intends to make the parade an annual event. The first one is set for the evening of Saturday, Oct. 24.

The group's director, Sharene Shariatzadeh (shah-REEN' shah-ree-ah-ZAH'-day), says she hopes the parade and other activities surrounding it become "iconic." The parade most closely associated with Chicago now is the one for St. Patrick's Day.

Musicians and artistic groups will be featured in the parade. Organizers are prohibiting teenagers and adults from wearing masks as a safety precaution. The procession will be monitored by police and other security.

Among others playing a role are the Field Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Joffrey Ballet.
