Prosecutors seeking DNA sample in Gary officer's slaying

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - The Lake County prosecutor's office wants to obtain a DNA sample from a 27-year-old man accused of killing a Gary police officer.

Carl Blount is charged with murder in the July 2014 shooting death of officer Jeffrey Westerfield. The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1P0djeK ) reports that the state is seeking the death penalty against Blount, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney David Urbanski said at a hearing Wednesday that the state believes it has enough probable cause to obtain a search warrant for the DNA sample.

An attorney for Blount said he plans to file a motion seeking to stop the state from obtaining the DNA sample.

A hearing on the DNA sample request is scheduled for Nov. 18.
