Former ambassador to speak in Mettawa about U.N. mission

Former U.S. Ambassador Thomas Pickering will discuss the far-flung mission of the United Nations during a presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Stevenson Center on Democracy, 25200 N. St. Mary's Road, Mettawa. Cost is $15. Coffee and conversation will follow. Pickering served as U.S. Ambassador and Representative to the United Nations from 1989 to 1992. He retired from the state department in 2000 after holding positions in Tanzania, Geneva and Washington, including assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Oceans, Environmental and Scientific Affairs. He joined the Boeing Company as a senior vice president in 2006 and is the current chairman of Hills & Company, an international consulting firm.
