Police: Partial remains match DNA of missing Elk Grove Village man

Partial remains found by a fisherman last winter along Salt Creek near Wood Dale have been matched with the DNA of a missing Elk Grove Village man, police said Wednesday.

Westin Bolin, 26, went missing June 27, 2014, near John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Brantwood Avenue in Elk Grove. Since then, police, family and friends have conducted searches throughout the area, including Salt Creek and Busse Woods.

But it was a fisherman who found a leg bone along the creek in December that was ultimately determined to belong to Bolin, following tests completed last week at a state crime lab, according to Elk Grove Deputy Police Chief Chuck Walsh.

Authorities haven't been able to determine a cause of death, but they do not suspect any foul play.

"Not only does the family have closure, but the community now knows," Walsh said. "It's unfortunate."

After the fisherman found the bone and reported it to police, investigators discovered more bones in the area, north of Thorndale Avenue in an unincorporated area, Walsh said.

Police told Bolin's family in December that remains had been found, and acquired a DNA sample of Bolin's to send to the state crime lab.

Tests showed 99 percent confirmation the remains match Bolin's DNA profile, Walsh said.

Authorities from Elk Grove, Wood Dale, and DuPage County assisted in the investigation.
