Rose return not likely anytime soon

Fred Hoiberg returned from his visit to Derrick Rose's high-rise condo with potentially alarming news.

Rose is resting after having surgery to repair a fractured orbital bone below his left eye and is supposed to resume basketball activities next week. Hoiberg said Rose's left eye is swollen shut, then backtracked a bit when asked again before Tuesday's game against Milwaukee.

"I don't know if it was completely shut," he said. "There was a little opening he could look through and I'm sure it will get better by the day.

"The surgery went as planned, everything seems to be going as it's supposed to at this point. … He's moving around. He's (doing) great. He just can't do anything right now to get his blood pressure up."

Rose was injured in the first practice of training camp on Sept. 29. The purpose of Hoiberg's visit was to help teach Rose the team's new offense. He plans to visit again Wednesday before the Bulls leave town for a pair of road preseason contests.

"We've added probably three sets, three actions, from when Derrick was here that first day," Hoiberg said. "We also sent him the file of everything we've got going.

"The good thing about Derrick is he's been in here since Labor Day. We've been able to get a little bit of a head start by watching film and getting in small groups, try to get a little bit ahead of the game going into training camp. He did pick things up quickly, I'll say that. And I don't think it will take long to get that back."

Parker makes progress:

Bucks second-year forward Jabari Parker, who is returning from a torn ACL in his left knee, did not play Tuesday, and coach Jason Kidd is unsure when the Chicago native will play.

"Jabari's done a lot of work this summer and he's playing 5-on-5, he's doing everything in training camp," Kidd said before the game. "We're not going to put a timetable on it. It's less than a year since the injury and he's done a lot of good stuff. So we want to make sure when it is time for him to come back, it's not where he's in and out (of the lineup).

"From my eyes, he looks like he did last year. He's doing a lot of good things. You can see why he's a No. 2 pick. We're excited to have him back."

Hinrich to return soon:

Coach Fred Hoiberg doesn't think the toe injury that kept Kirk Hinrich out of Tuesday's preseason opener is cause for concern.

"It's just a little nagging thing. He's fine," Hoiberg said before the game. "He could definitely go tonight, but we're going to take a cautious approach. Kirk will be back playing on this road trip."

Bull horns:

The Bulls unveiled a radically remodeled United Center locker room on Tuesday. The old locker room was basically a big square. The new one is a wider rectangle with darker lighting and red nameplates above each locker. … The regular Benny the Bulls was back in action Tuesday after missing the end of last season with a knee surgery.
