Harlem Ambassadors to visit Batavia High School

Does the term "Batavia Dream Team" conjure up thoughts of some of the greatest Batavia basketball players on the floor at the same time?

It did for me, too. But we're willing to settle for some hardworking school and community officials who are prepared to participate in what organizers are calling "hoops and hijinks" in a comedy basketball show against the Harlem Ambassadors at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Batavia High School gym.

It's all to help the Batavia Bulldog Boosters and the Batavia United Way. Anytime a hint of Harlem-style basketball comes to town, you know the young kids in the audience will get a kick out of it.

Batavia basketball coach Jim Nazos takes on the task of coaching the Dream Team, which includes Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker, physical education instructor Phil Albrecht and a cast of other school administrators and PE teachers.

Advance tickets on sale at the high school are $5 for students and $8 for adults, while children age 4 and younger get in free.

Soaks it all in

Unless the school decides it is just a significant economic benefit, it doesn't seem likely Marmion High School will ever have to put in an artificial turf field at its football stadium.

Why? I was at the Marmion game a couple of weeks ago when nearly two hours of rain stopped play. When the teams came back on and finished the game, I figured I was going to slop around in mud to get quotes from players and coaches afterward.

Nope. The plush, thick grass was wet, to be sure. But my shoes didn't even get muddy. This place has great drainage and really solid turf.

Anyone in charge of Soldier Field's lousy field listening?

No more Munchies

For the past few decades, Munchie P's on the east side of Geneva has been a reliable pit stop for a good lunch.

Folks in Elburn surely felt the same way about its Munchie P's restaurant on Valley Drive. They must be disappointed that the place closed unexpectedly last week.

The place went off into the sunset with a note to patrons taped to a side window, with the owner thanking residents for all of the support.

Here's to hoping the Geneva site doesn't suffer a similar fate any time soon.

Some new poles

The long streetlight poles lying on the ground along the Randall Road parkway at both the Gleneagle and Christina streets intersections in Geneva may actually go up soon.

At least that's what a few county highway workers said when they were in the area a couple of weeks ago.

Those poles have been sitting a long time, making one wonder if someone put the kibosh on the idea for new streetlights.

Some of them may even be up by the time you read this.

Just one win

That's all I'm asking for, is just one win tonight. If the Chicago Cubs can do that, they move on to the division series of the National League playoffs.

I just had to write that, mainly because it's just amazing that I can. If someone told me three or four years ago that the Cubs would be in the playoffs by 2015, I would have given his name to the police as someone to keep an eye on.

Maybe I'll see you in one of the area sports bars or taverns tonight to hopefully celebrate a significant win.
