Get your creative juices flowing at Maker Day

Whether you are artsy or "sciency," creative or still bragging about the Popsicle stick fort you built in second grade, you are sure to enjoy Maker Day at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg.

This celebration of all things Do-It-Yourself will take place from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Come and explore the practice of learning and doing by participating in a variety of hands-on activities.

Let your DIY spirit soar with artists, inventors, robots, carpenters and more during this day of creativity, contests and discovery.

Young and old alike will have opportunities to try their hands at engineering, sculpting, 3-D printing, robotics, Lego building, woodworking and more. Participating companies and organizations will include Chibots, Legoland Discovery Center Chicago, The SciTech Hands on Museum, the InterKnit Machine Knitter's Guild, Discovery Center Museum, MaKey MaKey and others.

In addition to all of the "maker" opportunities, attendees can play with a supersized Tetris and watch a live carpentry demonstration with a chance to win a handmade table. All are encouraged to compete for prizes in the engineering challenges.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Stop by Saturday, Oct. 17, to experience all the fun of Maker Day. And don't let your creative or inventive juices run dry when Maker Day ends. Come to the library for many "maker" experiences, including seasonal ceramics workshops, a demonstration on making Thanksgiving foods and Poisoned Pens, a writing seminar led by murder mystery authors.

The library's computer classes present opportunities to learn creative technology, including photo enhancement using Photoshop and website creation with Dreamweaver. Additionally, teens can get inventive and artistic with programs like Frankenstein's Lab, Horror Movie Makeup, Robotic Challenges

For the littlest library users, the library has many DIY programs coming up, including Egg Flight, Pumpkin Art, Young Scientists and Painted Fall Leaves.

Whatever your age, whatever your DIY passion, you are likely to find something appealing among the library's many "maker" offerings. No registration or fee is required for this event.
