Missing deer hunter found in northwest Indiana wildlife area

SCHNEIDER, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a hunter was found safe in northwestern Indiana after he went missing when he became disoriented while following a deer.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources say 23-year-old Seth Basler of Saint John was found at about midnight Sunday at the LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area near Schneider in Lake County. Authorities say Basler called 911 at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday to report he was lost and his phone battery was almost dead.

Schneider police and state conservation officers searched on ATV and foot for several hours before hearing Basler's voice. Officers used satellite images to find Basler near a large wetland.

Basler wasn't injured when officers found him. He constructed a shelter and a fire. He told officers he used skills he learned in an Indiana Hunter Education Course.
