Harvest Hustle and Pumpkin Patch kick off fall in South Elgin

South Elgin kicked off its celebration of fall with the FUNdation's 11th annual Harvest Hustle 5K, 7K Conquer Hustle Hill Run and 2 Mile Walk, followed by the city's annual Pumpkin Patch and Fall Festival at SEBA/County Park Saturday.

Participating in the run and walk events were 149 people, which was up from last year according to South Elgin Parks and Recreation Director Kim Wascher. The overall winner for the 7K was David McCollam with a time of 23:22.5, and Luis Hinojosa of Elgin took first place in the 5K with a time of 20:46.3.

In the nearby pumpkin patch, best friends and South Elgin residents Jessica Mankus and Stephanie Wilson watched their children scamper around, looking for the orange squash of their choice. The families have been coming together to the even for the past five years. "Close, hometown fun," is the way Wilson described the festival.

"It's not too crowded and it doesn't cost much. This is perfect," said Mankus.
