Suburban Chicago man sentenced in Islamic group theft

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A former financial director for a suburban Chicago Islamic institution has been sentenced to five years in state prison for stealing $450,000 from his then employer.

The DuPage County state's attorney's office says 61-year-old Inam Rahim was sentenced Thursday. The Naperville man was also ordered to pay full restitution to the Villa Park-based Islamic Foundation.

State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement that Rahim had "systematically defrauded and betrayed the trust of a religious and educational organization."

Rahim pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of theft.

Prosecutors say Rahim began working at the Islamic Foundation in 1999. He was responsible for handling the payroll and bills of the foundation and its school.

Rahim was accused, among other things, of inflating his own paychecks and falsifying payment records.
