Carpentersville company creates haunted corn maze

A Carpentersville company has constructed its own outdoor haunted corn maze that will be open to the public through October.

Dane Willman, a 15-year Carpentersville resident and the owner of 3W Enterprises, LLC, wanted to bring a fun and affordable fall event to the area for all ages.

The haunted corn maze, at 400 D Maple Ave. behind Cross Container, will open at 5 p.m. Thursday to Sunday through Halloween. How late the maze stays open each night depends on its popularity, Willman said.

"I feel that the village of Carpentersville has lost something over the years," he said. "We used to have parties and concerts in the park and all kinds of things going on in the village. I'm trying to bring a little more life back to Carpentersville."

It started as a simple idea, he said, but the construction supply company started to get innovative.

One of Willman's employees drew up a plan for the maze. Then, another found a farmer who was willing to sell them tens of thousands of cornstalks, which were sewed on to temporary construction fencing.

Before they knew it, they were adding a light show, as well as ghouls, goblins and other spooky features, Willman said.

"It morphed into all kinds of things," he said. "When I do stuff like this, I go all out. It turned into something huge."

The haunted corn maze stretches 1,560 linear feet and takes at least 20 minutes to get through, Willman said.

Admission is $15 for people 12 and older, but they can get $5 off if they "like" 3W Enterprises on Facebook. Younger kids pay $5. The event is weather permitting, Willman said.

The first two hours of daylight are less scary, he said, noting that children and "timid souls" should take advantage of the early start time. Those who want the full effect should show up later in the evening, Willman said.

"It'll certainly give Carpentersville residents something to talk about," he said.
