Ballet 5:8 will perform 2 contemporary ballets Oct. 10 in Elgin

Ballet 5:8's first performance at Judson University will feature two of Ballet 5:8's dynamic contemporary ballets at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, in Herrick Chapel, 1151 N. State St. (Route 31) in Elgin.

The program's first work, "And Mercy," is a world premiere by New York choreographer and Chicago native Preston Miller. The work explores concepts of judgment, grace and mercy in an athletic, contemporary style that engages the eye in continuous, connected movement emerging seamlessly from the music.

The program's second work, "As We Pray," is a living, moving, emotion-filled picture of many different kinds prayer. Based on the words of the "Lord's Prayer," "As We Pray" uses a familiar journey of prayer as a framework, but it illuminates it into a meaningful experience for dancers and audience members alike through music, movement and poignant emotion.

Tickets to this performance are available directly via Ballet 5:8 in advance and on the day of the performance, pending seat availability.

Tickets are $15, $8 for students (with a valid college ID), and $10 for children 12 and younger. There are no additional fees associated with online purchase.

Founded in 2012 by Julianna Slager and Amy Kozol Sanderson, Ballet 5:8 is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization partially supported by donor funding and private and public grants. The professional company performs over 40 times each season in both traditional and nontraditional settings. The company's dance education center, Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts, further extends the accessibility of dance through high-quality training for over 150 students each year. The school offers a range of classes and residency programs at two locations in Frankfort and the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago. The mission of Ballet is 5:8 is to employ artistic ingenuity, innovation and excellence as they celebrate the exchange of ideas in the creative realm. Their ongoing commitment is to the creation and performance of new, abstract and narrative works from the basis of their Christian faith, and to the development and creative exploration of the dancing artists, choreographers and composers of the day. Their goal is to serve as a catalyst for genuine discussion of life and faith with audiences and artists alike, in the context of breathtaking dance performance.
