Suspect in Gurnee homicide in police custody

Police in Gurnee have a suspect in custody in connection with a domestic-related homicide investigation, authorities said. David M. Brocksom, 43, was taken into custody at about 7:45 p.m. last night, after a police officer performed a traffic stop as Brocksom was driving toward the police department's parking lot, officials said. According to police, officers found an unidentified person dead about 9:25 a.m. Sunday while responding to a report of an injury at a home on the 3700 block of Pacific Avenue. Full story.

Prospect Heights teachers ratify new deal, strike ends

Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 teachers ratified a tentative four-year contract yesterday afternoon, a vote that will put an end to a seven-day strike and get students back in school Monday. The District 23 Board of Education will meet Tuesday night, and if the board ratifies the agreement, the district and Prospect Heights Education Association will release a joint statement containing details on the agreement, according to a statement from the union. Money doesn't talk for Hampshire police

Facing his third moving violation in seven months, a Kane County man could learn the hard way that although money talks, Hampshire police are speaking a different language. Kyle H. Johnson, 24, of Elgin, faces a felony charge of bribing a public official or employee at a traffic stop Sept. 18, according to court records. Harper wins grant for apprenticeship programs

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded Harper College $2.5 million to support Apprenticeships on Demand, a new initiative that aims to integrate technical instruction and on-the-job learning to train workers in high-growth and high-demand fields including insurance, IT and manufacturing. Harper was the only college in Illinois to be selected among the 46 applicants awarded a total of $175 million, the single largest investment to date to expand U.S. apprenticeships. Recipients have pledged to train and hire more than 34,000 new apprentices over the next five years. Full story.

Suspect charged in sex assault of elderly Arlington Heights woman

A Cook County judge set bail at $5 million Sunday for a Mount Prospect man behind bars on charges stemming from the sexual assault of a 97-year-old woman last month at an assisted living and retirement facility in Arlington Heights. Frank Mendez, 51, of the 2000 block of West Algonquin Road, appeared in court for the first time Sunday on charges of home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated battery in connection with the Aug. 20 attack at Church Creek, near Central Road and Dwyer Avenue. Arlington Heights deacon: Seeing Pope Francis was a 'miracle'

Deacon Don Grossnickle wouldn't miss an opportunity to attend Mass in the United States with Pope Francis, but the way his weekend came together was “somewhat of a miracle.” Not only was Grossnickle, of the Our Lady of the Wayside parish in Arlington Heights, able to attend the papal Mass yesterday in Philadelphia, but he was also able to serve other worshippers. “God is being good to us. We're very blessed to celebrate with this pope that's so popular around the world,” the 67-year-old said. “It's not likely that I'm going to see the pope coming to the United States again. Bears suffer demoralizing loss to Seahawks

The Bears had a nice game plan for competing with the Seahawks yesterday, but without the benefit of an offense, even their best-laid plans couldn't prevent a 26-0 defeat. The loss left the Bears at 0-3 for the first time since 2003, while the Seahawks improved to 1-2 by winning their home opener. It was the first time the Bears have been shut out since 2002.
