Box Office Top 20: 'Hotel Transylvania 2' flies higher

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Hotel Transylvania 2" set the bar even higher for the best September opening of all time.

The animated sequel, featuring the voices of Adam Sandler and Mel Brooks, topped the box office with $48.5 million in its debut weekend - about $1 million more than initial Sunday estimates. The previous record holder was "Hotel Transylvania," which opened to $42.5 million in 2012.

Warner Bros.' "The Intern," starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, also scored a solid $17.7 million opening to take the second place spot, thanks to the older, female audience who turned out to see the Nancy Meyers written and directed film.

"Everest" was not so lucky. The fact-based adventure film about a disastrous 1996 expedition took fourth place in its nationwide expansion with only $13.2 million after playing exclusively on IMAX and premium large format screens last weekend.

Instead of ascending the charts by playing on over 3,000 screens, "Everest" found itself sandwiched between "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" ($14.3 million) and "Black Mass" ($11 million), which are both in their second weekend in wide release.
