Fishermen young and old try their luck in Busse Woods at Schneider derby

A small fish flopped around the top of a table Sunday as the young angler who caught it tried to grab it to be weighed by the Arlington Anglers.

He was one of more than 350 anglers, young and old, to take part in Cook County Commissioner Timothy O. Schneider's fifth annual fishing derby at Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village.

"This is our biggest fishing derby ever," said Schneider as he interacted with those fishing. "We are just excited to see young kids to old kids come out and spend a morning with their families and enjoy the outdoors instead of being in front of a laptop, or a computer, or a television set."

The event included prizes from Cabela's for some of the best, or luckiest, anglers.

The derby was part of the 100 events in one week to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

"The best part was reeling it up, because every time there would be a fish coming in, I'd think I'm going to go and catch some more," said Olivia Niewiardowski, 10, in Elk Grove Village as she held a fish that she caught.
