Railroads don't show concern for safety

I write in support of the letter from Timothy Cavanagh published Sept. 19. It has always seemed to me that the railways are oblivious to any complaints from the citizens.

I have been writing now for many years about the lack of safety measures on trains and the complete lack of response to any legitimate comments in protest.

The freight trains that go through Barrington are ancient, and it seems the cars which hold hazardous materials are the worst examples. I wonder why the residents of Jewel Park are not complaining, as the trains run right on their doorsteps.

I have come to the conclusion that it will take a terrible accident such as the Philadelphia catastrophe just this year, for the railways authorities to act. I pray this will not be the case, that an accident will make them act, but I fear this will happen.

Surely prudence and the welfare of the traveling public and good business practices are the objectives of the railway companies. This would not appear to be the case,
